Yes it is possible to set 8 bit color depths on XP. It's just a little hidden: From Display Properties, click 'Advanced'. Go to the 'Adapter' tab; Click on 'List All Modes.' All of the supported 8 bit/256 color modes will be listed in this window. Select one and click OK, then click OK at the next Window and your display mode will change. Recently my screen resolution defaults to 640x480 and the color quality to 256. I can reset the resolution to the desired 1024x768 and color quality to 32 bit and the display responds to these settings until the computer is rebooted. After a restart the settings revert back to 640x480 and 256 color quality.

but i cannot run the game because it needs 256 (8 bit if its more comfortable for you) colors to run (says that when i run the exe)
but i only have 2 options 16 and 2
i managed to acually get a 256 option by going to control panel->display->settings->adapter->change and then i asked for a list of drivers i chosed super vga which i read is compatible with any hardware (or somthing like that) it asks me to restart and after it does i have the 256 color option when i choose it and press ok again it asks to restart again - when it starts it says i have a problem with the display settings and that the adapter type isnt correct or that the settings cannot work with my hardware (but it did worked in 16 colors)
it forces it back to 16 colors
so i ask if theres anything i could do to make this problem go away? - i know it doesnt sound like a vbox problem but i considered it may have somthing to do with it
